Reparation for War Crimes

A Tokyo court rejected claims by 48 Chinese plaintiffs for compensation arising from chemical weapons left in China by Japanese troops at the end of WWII. The Japanese court found that Japan should have expected the dumped chemical arms could harm Chinese residents, but that "It was difficult for the Japanese government to investigate all the suspected areas since the weapons were abandoned in vast areas of main China."

Japan's Sendai High Court dismissed claims of Chinese plaintiffs for damages against the Japanese Government and companies for forced labour during WWII on the ground that China has waived all claims for war reparation in the 1972 Sino-Japanese Joint Statement. A Chinese FM spokesman said China strongly opposed the "arbitrary" interpretation by the Japanese court of the Joint Statement and called the interpretation "illegal and invalid".

Japan's Nishimatsu Construction Company reached a settlement with Chinese labourers who sued in a Tokyo court for forced labour during WWII. The Japanese company would pay 250 million yen into a fund to compensate 360 Chinese plaintiffs.
